이정식 《NIL》 

프리즈 하우스 서울 <Summer Sparks I>에서 이정식 《NIL》을 선보인다. 

“당신은 나를 단어로 소비한다.” 

‘HIV 감염인’, ‘게이’, ‘성노동자’. 작가 이정식과 그의 주변을 규정하기 위해 호출되는 이 단어들은 언뜻 명확해 보인다. 

그러나 그 단어가 선명해질수록, 정작 그 안의 개인은 흐려진다. 약을 건네주던 친구의 존재는 사라지고, 자극적인 단어만이 표면에 남는다. 

이번 전시 《NIL》은 바로 그처럼 존재가 비워지고, 끝내 하나의 표면으로 소비되는 방식에 관한 것이다. 

영상, 부조, 회화로 구성된 이번 전시는 한 사람이 타인의 시선과 언어에 의해 어떻게 다시 형성되는지를 되짚는다. 

그 과정에서 드러나는 것은 온전한 자아가 아니라, 소문과 두려움, 연대와 소멸의 흔적이 새겨진 연약한 표면이다.

“You consume me with words.”

“Person living with HIV,” “gay,” “sex worker.” These words, summoned to define artist Jung Sik Lee and those around him, may appear clear at first glance. Yet the more sharply such labels are articulated, the more the individual within them begins to blur. The friend who once handed over pills disappears, and only sensational keywords remain on the surface. NIL is about precisely this process: the way a being is emptied out and ultimately consumed as nothing more than a surface.

Composed of video, relief, and painting, the exhibition traces how a person is reshaped by the gaze and language of others. What emerges is not a stable self, but a fragile surface marked by rumor, fear, solidarity, and disappearance.
