이정식 개인전 《THEY, THEM AND THEM》 

오는 2026년 6월 12일부터 7월 3일까지, PINPOINT ART CENTRE와 협업으로 

BLOOM, Düsseldorf에서 이정식 개인전 《THEY, THEM AND THEM》이 열린다. 

《THEY, THEM AND THEM》은 게이 크루징의 긴장과 쾌락에서 출발해, 

성노동의 취약성, 살해 이후를 떠도는 소문, 그리고 HIV 감염 사실을 마주한 고백들에 이르기까지 한국 사회 속 게이들의 단면을 따라간다. 

그러나 이 전시는 특정한 정체성의 사례를 제시하는 데 머물지 않는다. 

사랑하기 위해, 사랑받기 위해, 생계를 책임지며 살아가기 위해 자신을 내맡기는 인간의 보편적인 몸짓을 함께 보여준다. 

제목의 ‘그들’은 한국 사회의 어떤 타자만을 가리키지 않는다. 그들은 나이자 너이고, 우리이자 타인이다. 

구별된 것처럼 보이지만, 끝내 누구나 될 수 있는 이름이다. 

이번 전시 속 네 편의 영상은 이정식 한 사람의 고백에서 출발해, 하나의 보편적 인간의 이야기로 독일에 도착한다. 

그들은 누구인가.
그들을 ‘그들’이라고 부르는 우리는 누구인가.
그리고 어느 순간, 나는 왜 그들 안에 들어가 있는가. 

이정식은 ‘그들’의 바깥에서 그들을 대상화하지 않는다. 

그는 그들 안에 속해 있으면서도 잠시 물러서서 바라보고, 다시 그 안으로 들어간다. 

이 왕복의 시선 속에서 작가는 개인의 고통을 재현하는 데 머물지 않는다. 

오히려 누군가를 ‘그들’로 호명하고 분리한 채, 끝내 바깥에 남겨두는 사회의 언어와 구조를 드러낸다.

Jung Sik Lee, THEY, THEM AND THEM

From June 12 to July 3, 2026, Jung Sik Lee’s solo exhibition THEY, THEM AND THEM will be held at BLOOM, Düsseldorf, in collaboration with PINPOINT ART CENTRE.

THEY, THEM AND THEM begins with the tension and pleasure of gay cruising, moving through the precarity of sex work, rumors that linger after murder, and confessions that emerge in the face of an HIV diagnosis, tracing fragments of gay life within Korean society. Yet the exhibition does not remain at the level of presenting particular cases of identity. It also reveals universal human gestures—surrendering oneself in order to love, to be loved, and to survive while bearing the weight of one’s livelihood.

The “they” of the title does not refer only to a specific other within Korean society. They are me and you, us and others. They may seem separate, but in the end, it is a name that anyone can come to bear. The four videos in this exhibition begin with the confession of one person, Jung Sik Lee, and arrive in Germany as the story of a universal human being.

Who are they?
Who are we, who call them “they”?
And at what moment do I find myself among them?

Jung Sik Lee does not objectify “them” from the outside. Even as he belongs among them, he steps back for a moment to look, and then reenters that space. Within this back-and-forth gaze, the artist does not remain at the level of representing individual suffering. Rather, he reveals the language and structures of society that name certain people as “they,” separate them, and ultimately leave them outside.
